NYC Thanksgiving Parade Route: Where to Stand & When
Watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade in person sounds simple until you realize how quickly Manhattan streets become crowded and barricaded. The NYC Thanksgiving parade route begins on the Upper West Side and ends at Macy's Herald Square. For 2026, the parade takes place Thursday, November 26, marking the 100th edition of the New York City Thanksgiving Parade.
If you're staying at The Pearl Hotel, however, you have a major advantage: the hotel sits at 233 West 49th Street, putting you within walking distance of the Midtown portion of the route.
What Is the NYC Thanksgiving Parade Route?
The established Thanksgiving Day parade route in NYC begins at West 77th Street and Central Park West. The procession travels south along Central Park West to Columbus Circle, turns east along Central Park South, then heads south on Sixth Avenue, also called Avenue of the Americas. It continues to West 34th Street before turning west toward Macy's Herald Square. The route is approximately 2.5 miles long.
For spectators, the important point is that not every block offers the same experience. Central Park West provides the classic balloon views, while Sixth Avenue gives you a long stretch of the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade route with marching bands, floats and balloons passing directly through Midtown.
Where Should You Stand for a Good View?
For the best combination of visibility and convenience, aim for Sixth Avenue between West 59th and West 38th Streets. The stretch farther south generally puts you closer to The Pearl Hotel without forcing you into the heaviest crowds around Herald Square.
From The Pearl Hotel, the Sixth Avenue viewing area around West 50th Street is roughly a 5-minute walk, although barricades and crowd-control measures can add time. A spot around West 57th Street is roughly a 10- to 15-minute walk. If you want the Upper West Side experience, Central Park West between roughly West 75th and West 61st Streets offers excellent views, but expect a much earlier start and heavier crowds.
Avoid planning your morning around Columbus Circle or the final blocks around Herald Square. Columbus Circle is a major turning point with restricted spectator areas, while the broadcast zone near Sixth Avenue and West 34th Street has limited public viewing.
What Time Should You Arrive?
For a decent curbside position, aim to arrive around 6:00 to 7:00 a.m. Earlier is better if you want Central Park West. The parade broadcast begins at 8:30 a.m., and the procession traditionally starts around that time before taking several hours to reach Herald Square.
From The Pearl, you can leave shortly before 6 a.m., walk north toward your chosen viewing area and still avoid the worst of the morning transportation disruption. Dress for standing outside in late-November weather, wear comfortable shoes and bring layers.
Which Streets Close?
The NYC Thanksgiving Day parade route creates a much larger restricted zone than the parade itself. The latest official city guidance has closed Central Park West, Columbus Circle, Central Park South and Sixth Avenue around the route, with additional restrictions on nearby streets. The city has also previously restricted cross-town traffic and established limited pedestrian crossings on Sixth Avenue.
For 2026, do not assume you can simply cross Sixth Avenue wherever you want. If you need to move from one side of Midtown to another, expect to walk to an authorized crossing or go around the restricted zone. Driving and rideshares are particularly poor choices near the route. The MTA subway remains the practical option, although the final 2026 service plan has not yet been released.
Bathrooms and Warm-Up Spots
Plan your bathroom stop before claiming your viewing position. The safest option is to use the facilities at The Pearl Hotel before leaving. Public restrooms are available in Central Park, including locations near West 61st Street, but access can become complicated once barricades and crowds fill the sidewalks.
For warmth, the simplest strategy is to return to your room after watching the parade. The Pearl Hotel is only a few blocks from Sixth Avenue, so you can get out of the cold without navigating far into Midtown.
What to Do Right After the Parade Near The Pearl Hotel
Once the parade passes, resist the urge to fight the crowds around Herald Square. Instead, walk back toward The Pearl and make the Theater District your Thanksgiving afternoon base.
Start with lunch or an early drink at Empire Steak House, located inside The Pearl. Hotel guests receive discounts there, making it an especially convenient choice after several hours outside.
You can also walk to Rockefeller Center, about seven minutes from the hotel, or continue toward Central Park, roughly a 15-minute walk. The Pearl's location puts Times Square about four minutes away on foot, while Radio City Music Hall is roughly eight minutes away.
Make Parade Morning Easier From The Pearl Hotel
The Thanksgiving parade route in NYC is much easier to navigate when your hotel sits close to the action. The Pearl Hotel puts you within walking distance of the Midtown viewing areas while keeping you close to restaurants, theaters, Rockefeller Center and multiple subway lines.
